Microsoft SQL Server 2017 is one of the leading database platforms, trusted by organizations worldwide. Since SQL Server 2008 R2, the SQL Server team has delivered over 100 significant new features.

SQL Server 2017 offers substantial improvements and gives organizations choices of development languages, data types, on-premises or cloud, and operating systems (by bringing the power of SQL Server to Linux).

It also includes support for Linux-based Docker containers and many other new, enhanced or performance improvements to the Database Engine, Integration Services (SSIS), Master Data Services (MDS), Analysis Services (SSAS), Reporting Services (SSRS), and Machine Learning Services.

Transitioning from
SQL Server 2008 to 2017
In July 2019, Microsoft will no longer be offering support for SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2. With End of Support (EOS) Microsoft will stop releasing security updates for those SQL Server releases on-premises. Databases will face great risk of being hacked and will no longer conform to many regulatory requirements. For database workloads that will remain on-premises due to regulatory requirements or customer preference, a performance-tuned and cost-effective solution is needed, that includes migration to supported releases of SQL Server and Windows Server. When organizations upgrade to SQL Server 2017, they will also have to refresh their 2008-era hardware.
